Diade showcases the potential of recycled polyester textiles made from ocean-bound plastic waste.
It offers a rich, matte quality, the same level of performance as virgin polyester, and is recyclable.
Ocean-bound polyester
Ocean-bound polyester exemplifies Kvadrat’s conscious design principles. The yarns are created in close
collaboration with #tide, a Swiss-based company committed to conscious entrepreneurship and to building
a global supply chain for premium second-life raw material made from ocean-bound plastic waste
Ocean-bound plastic can be defined as waste that is very likely to end up in the ocean. #tide works with local communities, in areas where better waste management infrastructure is needed, to prevent plastic waste reaching the ocean by collecting it from the coastlines as well as removing it from the ocean. The waste is collected no further than 10 km away from coastlines and on remote islands in Thailand. It is then sorted and ground into plastic chips, before being extruded into filaments and spun into polyester yarn.
Importantly, as most of the plastic waste is collected further from the ocean, it has not yet started to disintegrate. This means that the recycled polyester is of superior quality and offers the same level of performance as virgin polyester without requiring the addition of virgin polyester or recycled polyester from other sources. It is also recyclable.
Due to the nature of working with recycled content, colour deviations will occur between consignments, especially where light colours and undyed yarns are used.
