Shanghai Poly Grand Theatre

Kvadrat textiles have been chosen for the Shanghai Poly Grand Theatre. The building, which contains the city’s first ‘waterscape theatre’, is located by Yuanxiang Lake, in Jiading New Town. The Shanghai Poly Grand Theatre is designed by Tadao Ando. It comprises a main hall, a multi-function hall and plazas, as well as two ‘semi-outdoor’ theatres named ‘water stage’ and ‘roof theatre’.

Geometric shapes, reflecting the signature style of Tadao Ando, can be seen throughout the architecture. For example, interlaced cylindrical elements make up the entrance lobby, lounge and outdoor theatres. The design of the theatre reflects that Tadao Ando placed a great deal of attention on its relationship with water, wind and light – notably its integration with the natural landscape.

The 1466 seats in the main theatre are upholstered in a Trevira CS version of Steelcut Trio, in a greyish brown shade. A red version of the textile is used for the 400 seats in the multi-functional hall.
