Mondrian London at Sea Containers

Project
Kvadrat textiles are used throughout the Mondrian London at Sea Containers, which opened in September 2014. Located on the banks of the Thames, between the OXO Tower and Blackfriars Bridge, the hotel has 359 guest rooms, a riverside restaurant, two bars, a screening room, a spa and meeting facilities.

Tom Dixon’s Design Research Studio created the interior, which has a distinctly nautical feel. The designer used a 1920’s cruise liner for inspiration. The hotel’s bedrooms feel like ship cabins: they are compact, neatly organised and fitted throughout. All are furnished with custom designed furniture in rich colours, which create an eye-catching contrast with maritime-themed metallic pieces.

Solution
Haakon, Harald, Hallingdal, Steelcut, Steelcut Trio, Tindra, Tonica, Tonus and Outback are used in many areas of the hotel. Haakon is used on banquet seating in the lobby and bar breakout area. In guest rooms, wingback chairs are upholstered in Harald and Steelcut Trio; sofas are covered with Tonus; and there are also chairs upholstered with Tonus and Hallingdal. A total of 4800 square metres are used.

‘Design Research Studio have a long standing relationship with Kvadrat and their extensive range of luxurious and hardwearing upholstery fabrics were the first choice for our design team when it came to furnishing all 359 bedrooms. Referencing the transatlantic maritime history of the building and client group, we created custom designed furniture featuring Kvadrat’s rich colour palettes which contrasted against standout metallic pieces.’
