"Only When It Rains" by Teruhiro Yanagihara
“Only When It Rains…” is an installation presented at our Tokyo showroom by Japanese designer Teruhiro Yanagihara. Over the years, Teruhiro Yanagihara has collaborated with Kvadrat on three upholstery textiles: Haku, Autumn, and Ame.
The installation unfolds around the core themes that underlie Ame: traditional craftsmanship, nature, and sustainability. Ame is a contemporary reinterpretation of Japanese sashiko embroidery. Its flowing stitches evoke the image of gentle rain, while layered hues recall kimono colour palettes and the subtle transitions of natural tones.
The textile also embodies the Edo-period spirit of resourcefulness—continuing to use objects with care rather than discarding them—by employing 100% recycled polyester yarn made from textile waste. Working with Ame, designer Teruhiro Yanagihara collaborated with Kyoto-based “Footwear Sekizuka” to create a collection of traditional footwear. This symbolises the encounter between Danish textiles and Japanese craftsmanship.
Inspired by the anecdote that footwear shops once displayed umbrellas on rainy days, the installation features lighting objects shaped by the forms of footwear and umbrellas, reflecting the deep connection between “rain” and human life. Among our global installations, this exhibition uniquely highlights Japan’s cultural context—offering an experience rich with local identity.
