BOINGBOING JO NAGASAKA

During Salone del Mobile 2016 Kinnasand presented a special installation, boingboing, created by renowned Japanese architect Jo Nagasaka. Originally created in 2015 for our showroom in Tokyo, the installation boingboing consists of four free standing architectural structures in different sizes. All are crafted using just two materials: white Waver textile from our Zoom collection and optical fiber. Because of their transparency, buoyancy and flexibility, optical fiber strands were chosen and pierced into the textile to create cylindrical forms. Up close, the delicate mesh structure and the special warping technique used to create Waver are revealed.

» I AM FASCINATED BY THE REFINEMENT AND CRAFTSMANSHIP OF THE NEW COLLECTION WHEN I RECEIVE THE SAMPLES. I WANT TO KEEP THE BEAUTY OF TEXTILES AS ORIGINAL AS POSSIBLE. AS ARCHITECTS, MY TEAM AND I RARELY DEAL WITH ‘SOFT’ MATERIALS IN DAILY PRACTICE. WE ALSO WANT TO TAKE THE CHALLENGE FURTHER BY OMITTING THE USE OF ‘HANGING’ TEXTILE. AFTER TREMENDOUS EXPERIMENTING TO CREATE THE OPTIMAL STANDING FORMS AND THE BOUNCING MOVEMENT, WE ARE THRILLED WITH THE FINAL RESULT. «

The expressive installation invites visitors to interact with the forms by touching or pushing the surfaces. As the shapes absorb and respond to external force without partial deformation, a gentle bouncing or ‘boing boing’ motion is created. Each structure intentionally has different density of mesh, resulting in different degrees of movement.

In addition, the installation creates multiple visual layers, emphasising the translucent quality of the textile. To visualise this a short film is projected onto one side of the installation. By way of its translucency, visitors can see the film from all sides.

» JO NAGASAKA HAS A PLAYFUL AND THOUGHTFUL APPROACH TO DESIGN AND ARCHITECTURE. AS HE IS NOT USING A LOT OF TEXTILE IN HIS CONCEPTS, WE THOUGHT IT WOULD BE INTERESTING EXPERIENCE HOW AN ARCHITECT WOULD APPROACH CREATING A TEXTILE INSTALLATION. BOINGBOING RESEMBLES THE SPIRIT OF KINNASAND: DELICATE, CRAFTED, AIRY, SURPRISING AND INNOVATIVE. WE ARE VERY MUCH LOOKING FORWARD TO PRESENTING A NEW INTERPRETATION TO A WIDER AUDIENCE IN OUR KINNASAND FLAGSHIP SHOWROOM IN MILAN DURING SALONE DEL MOBILE 2016«
