Teresa Von Haken, Sales Manager in the A&E segment.

"Starting at Kvadrat introduced me to a way of working that is flexible and supportive, where you are given a lot of responsibility within a structure that feels like a big family."

Q: What do you do at Kvadrat?

I work as a salesperson in the A&E segment in Berlin, collaborating with architects on their projects and guiding them in specifying our textiles in their projects. I’m also a Kvadrat Febrik ambassador, which means I’m the go-to person for my colleagues when they have questions about our knitted textiles. I also enjoy working closely with Jos Pelders talking about novelties and finding inspiring ways to introduce them to our sales teams.

Q: How and when did you start your career at Kvadrat?

I joined Kvadrat almost seven years ago after completing my master’s in business economics. I had just returned to Germany after finishing my final semester in the US and had started searching for opportunities in Berlin. I came across this position and applied, even though I didn’t have much knowledge of the industry at the time. Looking back, it was one of the best decisions I’ve made. Kvadrat introduced me to the inspiring world of design and architecture, where I’ve continued to grow and learn ever since.

Q: What defines Kvadrat as a workplace in your opinion?

I think of Kvadrat as a workplace where people have a lot of freedom combined with clear responsibilities. Coming from a business economics background, I initially expected to find myself in a corporate environment with complex hierarchies. Starting at Kvadrat introduced me to a way of working that is flexible and supportive, where you are given a lot of responsibility within a structure that feels like a big family. Everyone knows exactly what they need to do, with a strong sense of understanding and collaboration, which is very positive.

Coming from a business university and then diving into the world of architecture, design, and art has been incredibly valuable, both professionally and personally. It is an inspiring environment and an opportunity that I do not think many companies could offer.

Q: What is your passion and how does it fit in your current role?

I’m passionate about aesthetics and quality, and these are all around me every day, whether I’m in the showroom or visiting clients. Like many of my colleagues, I am deeply passionate about the products themselves. For example, when we go to a hotel, the first thing we often do is touch the curtains. That curiosity and attention to detail reflect our passion for understanding materials and their quality.

Through my role, I’ve also developed a strong interest in architecture. Meeting clients and engaging with how cities and buildings evolve has given me a new perspective and a deeper understanding of the thought processes behind these developments. I find this fascinating and appreciate it, and I believe my clients sense this genuine interest.

Q: What are you most proud of accomplishing in your role?

Coming this far. I’m proud of my journey at Kvadrat, from starting as a student to now being responsible for the A&E segment in Berlin. What I’m most proud of are the relationships I’ve built with clients and how important they are, particularly from an international perspective. I am very proud to work with these people.

Q: How do you connect with your global/international colleagues?

I would love to connect more with my international colleagues, and I think this is a big task for Kvadrat now that there are so many people. Collaboration plays a key role in how I connect with colleagues around the world, especially through cross-border projects. Events like Salone del Mobile are also fantastic opportunities to meet team members from different regions and departments.

Q: How do you think of Kvadrat as an inclusive company?

We have a diverse group of people in our company, from many different backgrounds. It's not just those who have studied specific fields, but also those who bring craftsmanship experience. I believe it is an inclusive company with people from all kinds of backgrounds and ages, and we continue to grow. When I look back a few years, I can really see a difference, with more women stepping into management positions.

Q: What is your favourite Kvadrat product?

There are so many great products in our collection, so it’s hard to choose, but if I were to pick just one, Phlox definitely stands out for me. The Kvadrat/Raf Simons collection is something special. What I like about Phlox is that it combines a classic corduroy-like texture with a bold, contemporary colour palette. It features colours ranging from a bright, almost neon-like yellow to a beautiful, subtle pigeon blue. I love how Raf Simons combines two different approaches: a structure reminiscent of corduroy, which is quite old-school, with vibrant colours and a shine that is not typically seen in corduroys. It’s a very contemporary take on something classic.
