Klára Hosnedlová at the New Museum
Kvadrat supports Klára Hosnedlová’s site-specific commission for the highly anticipated reopening of the New Museum. The presentation, which is the celebrated young artist’s first museum project in the United States, continues Kvadrat’s long-term collaborative initiative with the New Museum.
The New Museum’s expansion, designed by OMA / Shohei Shigematsu and Rem Koolhaas in collaboration with Cooper Robertson, doubles the gallery space and establishes a dialogue with the existing building by SANAA on the Bowery. The new structure extends the museum vertically, introducing additional circulation routes, including three elevators and a central Atrium Stair. Within this space, Klára Hosnedlová inserts a spine-like metal form that winds through the architecture, unfolding gradually in relation to movement and perspective.
Draped in flax-based textiles, the form encloses a suspended core of sandstone and glass, detailed with intricate embroidery. The work reveals itself gradually, shifting in perspective as visitors move through the building, while remaining partially visible from the street through the glazed façade. Kvadrat provided textiles to support both the sculptural installation and a related performance developed by the artist. Materials, including Lino Lino and Cocoon, were integrated as apparel and props, extending the material language of the work beyond its physical structure. Within this context, textiles operate as connective elements, linking object, body, and space. They introduce a tactile dimension that evolves in relation to movement, light, and time.
Hosnedlová’s practice brings together references to Eastern Bloc architecture, science fiction, and traditional craft. Her installations combine industrial and organic materials, creating spatial compositions that engage with questions of labour, memory, and cultural inheritance.
