To meet the high demands a floating state-of-the-art 675-seat theatre sets, Yran & Storbraathen developed a customer velvet upholstery textile in collaboration with Kvadrat. The textile matches an in-house carpet design used on the Koningsdam.

We have used Kvadrat textiles to cover the theatre chairs with leather armrests. In a space where most walls are covered with LED screens, the theatre chairs have an even more important presence than in most theatres. High quality and flexibility for colours were key reasons for selecting Kvadrat, and contributed to an outstanding result,” Trond Sigurdsen, Chairman, Architect, Partner, Yran & Storbraathen.

The interior is characterised by architectural elements inspired by music, light-filled spaces, fluid curves and cutting-edge technology. A case-in-point is the theatre, which has a 270-degree LED wall that envelopes a centrally located stage. The auditorium is steeply sloped and, as a result, provides excellent sightlines across the space. The LED wall delivers scenography that brings spectators into the scene. The combination of the centrally located stage and use of walkways as part of the choreography is very engaging and intimate: the audience is literally placed in the middle of the action.

Koningsdam is a 2,650-guest cruise ship which was launched in 2016. The three-deck high vessel is owned by Holland America Line and registered in the Netherlands.
