We are proud to present the world’s first recycled polyester upholstery textile made out of 100% ocean-bound plastic waste.
The yarn used to produce Sport is derived entirely from ocean-bound plastic waste, collected within a maximum distance of 50 kilometres to the shoreline and 100 meters into the sea from coastlines and islands in Thailand. One meter of Sport breathes new life into 0.52 kilograms of ocean-bound plastic, giving waste a new purpose.
Every year, 31.9 million metric tons of plastic waste is generated within coastal regions. Often, such regions do not have the adequate waste management infrastructure needed to collect and recycle post-consumer plastic. As a consequence, it is very likely that the waste ends up in the ocean.
By collecting and upcycling ocean-bound plastic into premium raw materials, #tide not only reduces pollution but also safeguards diverse ecosystems. It is important to recognise that a significant portion of ocean plastic originates from land-based activities. Plastic waste accumulates in uncontrolled landfills, is carried into streams and rivers, and eventually finds its way into the oceans through various conduits. #tide aims to disrupt this cycle by collecting plastic waste from oceans, rivers, coastlines, and landfills, actively striving to prevent further pollution.
Ocean-bound plastic is estimated to generate 80% of marine plastic waste. Sport's yarn derives entirely from plastic waste collected no further than 10km away from shore. Collecting this plastic around coastlines is a sustainable initiative to prevent it from reaching and polluting the ocean.
