The Indian tradition of producing intricate rugs can be traced back for centuries. India is known not only for producing handmade rugs but also for the pride its artisans have for carrying on the tradition from generation to generation.
Produced by skilled craftsmen in India, our hand knotted rug Icon has a subtle shimmer and an outstanding depth of colour when light is reflected on its vivid surface. These characteristics are achieved by using delicate Chinese silk yarns and the Tibetan knotting technique.
The Tibetan knot has a completely different structure than other knots. It is made by using a temporary rod along the width of the rug, which is placed in front of the warp. The silk yarn is then twisted around two warp threads and around the rod. When the weaver is done with the entire row of knots, the loops around the rod are cut open to create the pile. Afterwards, the weavers use a special tool, the ‘punja’, to beat down and tighten the knots in the warp. The beating also directly affects the density of the pile.

Our Icon rug is constructed with an impressive 155.000 knots per square meter, resulting in a dense, sophisticated pile that shows the beauty and richness of the silk in the purest way. Depending on the size, up to 4 people are working simultaneously on one loom. Final treatment includes the shearing of the rug by hand to ensure a smooth, even surface.
