This Will Not End Well at Neue Nationalgalerie

The Neue Nationalgalerie's retrospective marks the first exhibition in Germany to comprehensively explore Nan Goldin's work as a filmmaker. Kvadrat is proud to support the exhibition with 2600 metres of Divina 3 and Divina Melange 3 by Finn Sködt, and Balboa by Sahco, each constituting respectively the interior, exterior and light lock layer of the six buildings.

Spanning six rooms, designed by one of Nan Goldin's frequent collaborators, architect Hala Wardé, the exhibition features artworks through slide shows and film projections, enriched by evocative soundtracks and music. Nan Golding's works delve into themes of love, intimacy, addiction, and loss, capturing tender moments of relationships, everyday life, wild parties, and the complex interplay between autonomy and dependency. Through her lens, Goldin continues to influence and redefine how we perceive contemporary life.

The retrospective revisits the foundation of Nan Goldin’s artistic practice. Having always aspired to be a filmmaker, Goldin views her slide shows as sequences of film stills. This Will Not End Well aligns with her original vision of how audiences should engage with her work.

One of the most high-profile artists of our time, Nan Goldin has had a major influence on younger generations for decades. Renowned primarily for her photography and her iconic exploration of the human experience through the lens of her camera, this retrospective marks the first comprehensive presentation of her work as a filmmaker.

About Nan Goldin

Nan Goldin (born in Washington D.C. in 1953) is one of the most high-profile artists of our time. Her work’s exploration of the human experience is legendary and has profoundly influenced subsequent generations. Her first work, The Ballad of Sexual Dependency, documents life in Provincetown, New York, Berlin and London beginning in the 1970s and 80s and up to the present day. Goldin photographed the world of her inner circle of creative, bohemian friends with raw tenderness. Her photographs give us snapshots of intimacy and coupling, the quotidian and wild parties, and the struggle between autonomy and dependency.
