Shenzhen Sea World Culture and Arts Center

Steelcut Trio, in reddish brown shade, is used to upholster the seating in a 328-seat theatre in the Shenzhen Sea World Culture and Arts Center – a large-scale multi-use development. The site occupies the south-eastern portion of the Shekou Peninsula, where it overlooks the ocean and provides beautiful views of Hong Kong’s mountains.

Designed by Maki and Associates, the building, which consists of a podium and a pavilion, hosts a variety of cultural functions. These include a museum, theatre, multi-purpose hall, and private art gallery, along with various culturally affiliated retail spaces.

The building is located within Sea World’s coastal city complex in Shekou, Nanshan District, Shenzhen. The urban placement of the center is symbolised by three large volumes on the roof which face in three different directions. Each offers a different local context: the sea, the mountains, and the city.

Three main plazas are positioned along the main axis of the building, The Cultural Plaza, The Central Plaza and The Waterfront Plaza. In addition, the adjacent park extends onto the roof via two grand stairways.
