100% Ocean-bound polyester

 

We are proud to present the world´s first upholstery textile woven from 100% ocean-bound recycled polyester.

 
 

The yarn used to produce Sport is derived entirely from ocean-bound plastic, collected no further than 10 km away from coastlines in Thailand. 

 

 

Every year, 31.9 million metric tons of plastic waste is generated within coastal regions. Often, such regions do not have the adequate waste management infrastructure needed to collect and recycle post-consumer plastic. As a consequence, it is very likely that the waste ends up in the ocean. 

Ocean-bound plastic is estimated to generate 80% of marine plastic waste. Sport's yarn derives entirely from plastic waste collected no further than 10km away from shore. Collecting this plastic around coastlines is a sustainable initiative to prevent it from reaching and polluting the ocean. 
 

Sport stands out as a sustainable choice among ocean-bound polyester textiles. Sport sources a significant portion of its ocean-bound plastic from coastal areas, effectively preventing it from becoming ocean waste. The collected plastic primarily comprises PET bottles, which undergo meticulous sorting and cleaning processes, with no additional chemicals, given that PET materials are free of harsh and hazardous substances. Ultimately, this plastic is transformed into granules, thereby preparing it for further processing into yarn.

Being the world's first upholstery textile made 100% recycled ocean-bound plastics, Sport offers a highly sustainable profile compared to other ocean-bound polyester textiles. These often incorporate plastic recovered much further from the sea – up to 50 km away - and typically integrate virgin polyester or non-ocean-bound recycled post-consumer polyester.
