Located in the centre of Amsterdam, the Booking.com City Campus brings together almost 6,000 employees from more than 130 nationalities within a single building. Designed by UNStudio, the campus introduces a new workplace model at an urban scale, combining offices, public functions, and shared spaces in a highly connected environment. Throughout the building, Kvadrat textiles play a central role in shaping both atmosphere and performance, supporting a cohesive experience across a wide range of spatial conditions.
The architecture is defined by its distinctive, faceted form. Angled façades and inclined window geometries create a dynamic exterior expression while introducing complexity for interior solutions. Managing daylight across these varied conditions required a shading approach that could adapt precisely without disrupting the overall visual coherence.
Kvadrat Shade supplied approximately 1,800 roller blinds across the campus. Each solution was tailored to the specific geometry of the façade, with custom-made blinds developed to fit angled and non-standard window formats. This ensured a consistent integration throughout the building, despite the variation in window orientation and shape.
The selected Retta textile supports both visual comfort and material clarity. The black colourway offers a refined, neutral appearance, while its ‘cool black’ construction improves light reflection compared to conventional dark textiles. This contributes to a more balanced daylight experience, reducing glare while maintaining a connection to the outside.
Spanning approximately 65.000 m², the building is one of the largest single-tenant office developments in the city. Its design responds to both urban integration and employee wellbeing, with a strong focus on daylight, openness, and interaction across teams.
In selected spaces, including the boardroom on the top floor and the studio, a layered shading approach is introduced. Here, two blinds are installed in front of the same façade: a semi-transparent Retta textile and a metallised Unlit Blockout. The combination allows users to adjust daylight and privacy independently, shifting from filtered views to full blackout conditions as required. This provides a higher level of control in spaces with specific functional demands, such as presentations and focused meetings.
Developed in close collaboration with multiple architectural studios, including HofmanDujardin, CBRE Design Collective, I29, Studio Modijefski, and Linehouse, the project required careful coordination across disciplines. The shading solution aligns with the broader interior concept, supporting both functional performance and a coherent spatial identity.
Sustainability was a key driver from the outset. The building achieves a BREEAM Excellent certification, reflecting a strong focus on environmental performance and long-term usability. Within this context, solar shading contributes to managing indoor climate and supporting occupant comfort throughout the day.
Together, the solution supports a workplace that is both highly adaptable and precisely resolved – responding to architectural complexity while creating a consistent and comfortable environment for a global organisation.
