Chongqing Grand Theatre

gmp von Gerkan, Marg and Partner architects have chosen Kvadrat textiles for the seating in all auditoriums in the Chongqing Grand Theatre, which opened in 2009.

The landmark structure, situated on a headland above the Yangtze River opposite the business district of the city, is acclaimed for its innovative structural architecture featuring complex-angled and broken glass surfaces. Designed around a maritime theme, the building’s concert halls are situated in a line similar to a ship’s keel, creating entrances at the ‘bow’ and ‘stern’ of the building.

Both auditoriums – the Grand Hall and the Medium Hall – are upholstered with Mega in 3 different colours: red, dark blue and grey. In total, 3,789 m of fabric was used to cover 2617 seats, which were designed by Quinette.
