Martino Gamper | Afternoon Nap

Martino Gamper has worked with Divina before, collaborating with Moroso on a range of sofas and armchairs in 2013. Then he used the fabric to form a collage. For this project he picked up the train of thought where he had left it off, and continued to explore the use of the fabric in this style.

“I was interested in working with this fabric because it is a multifunctional and all applicable fabric: it comes in infinite colours and it is simple but strong and durable,” he says. Once again he cut and combined the Divina fabric to form a new shape and pattern, this time making a hybrid between a tatami mat and a mattress. “For me this simple shape mixed with the complex and colourful fabric creates a landscape where I could imagine having an afternoon nap.”

Working across design and art, Martino Gamper engages in a variety of projects from exhibition design, interior design, one-off commissions and the design of mass-produced products for the cutting edge of the international furniture industry.

Gamper has presented his works and projects internationally, including at The Modern Institute, Glasgow, the V&A in London and the Centre dʼArt Contemporain, Genève, among many others. He also designed the public street furniture for the Park-to-Park connection from Victoria Park to the Olympic Park, London in collaboration with the London Thames Gateway Development Corporation.

Gamper was the recipient of the Moroso Award for Contemporary Art in 2011, and the Brit Insurance Designs of the Year, Furniture Award, in 2008 for his project ‘100 Chairs in 100 days’.
