This Will Not End Well at Stedelijk Museum
As part of the international tour of museums and following its debut at Moderna Museet in Stockholm nearly a year ago, This Will Not End Well is currently on view at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Nan Goldin´s comprehensive retrospective is exhibited in the largest gallery of the Stedelijk, spanning across six buildings, designed in collaboration with architect Hala Wardé. The exhibition features 2600 meters of Divina 3 and Divina Melange 3 by Finn Sködt, alongside Balboa by Sahco, creating an immersive experience for visitors. It is a captivating journey through Goldin's deeply personal exploration of the emotions permeating human lives.
Each of the six spaces is meticulously crafted to complement specific artworks, collectively forming a village that encapsulates the artist's bohemian and intimate nightlife. Among the array of artworks presented in This Will Not End Well, visitors will encounter one of Goldin´s masterpieces: The Ballad of Sexual Dependency (1982 – 2022). This slideshow, comprising nearly 700 images, traverses the artist's experiences in New York during the 1970s and 1980s, offering an authentic portrayal of a generation amid the eruption of the AIDS epidemic in her community.
Throughout Goldin's body of work, captured through the lens of her camera, visitors will immerse themselves in the every day and the extraordinary. Nan Goldin´s art vividly portrays the intricate nuances of intimacy, vulnerability, and the paradoxical coexistence of autonomy and dependency, all supported by music, voice-overs, and archival materials.
