We want to ensure our products are designed in accordance with the United Nations Sustainability Development Goal 12, Responsible Consumption and Production. It is estimated that design defines over 80% of all environmental impacts of a product. Hence, we are committed to making conscious decisions from the early design development phase, to the selection of materials, until the final stage of packaging our products.

A product’s circular potential is determined at the design stage. Building on our continued commitment to the longevity of our products, Kvadrat's Conscious Design Principles will guide the design direction for our brands and our production partners, while reducing our dependence on virgin materials and resources.

Our targets

We will reduce production waste intensity by 25% and 90% of remaining waste will be recycled by 2030 (baseline 2021)

We will reduce water intensity by 25% by 2030 (baseline 2022)

We will only use recycled and 100% recyclable packaging and we will phase out plastic packaging by 2030 (baseline 2023)

We will offer circular services which will generate 40% of our revenue by 2035

We will offer 100 recycled textile products which will generate 30% of our revenue by 2030

We will achieve the EU Ecolabel certification for all products that generate 90% of our textile revenue by 2030

Our 2022 performance highlights

21 new recycled products

We are working on replacing virgin material with recycled alternatives. In order to be considered ‘recycled’ our products must contain a minimum of 20% recycled materials for natural fibres and 70% for synthetic fibres. The material used for our products is sourced from post-industrial and post-consumer waste. In 2022, we launched 21 new products containing recycled materials.

Upcycled more than 300 tons of textile waste

The United Nations has acknowledged the importance of waste reduction and called for action with the targets under SDG goal 12. In 2022, we contributed to this objective with the launch of Kvadrat Really Tabletops. By upcycling more than 300 tons of textile waste into new products, Kvadrat Really exemplifies closed-loop solutions.

Reduced water footprint

In 2022, we launched Arda by Kvadrat Febrik. The manufacturing of this upholstery textile moves away from conventional washing, opting for soaking-only processing. The result is a remarkable reduction in water usage by between 80% to 95%. In addition, our Norwegian partner Innvik is investing in a new dyehouse that is expected to decrease water consumption by 20%.

60% water recycling in our production

We commit to conscious water usage. As of 2022, we recycled 60% of the water used in our own production sites. Additionally, our UK partner Wooltex recycled 79% of the water used in their finishing processes.

25 tons of woollen waste recycled

In 2022, we gave new life to 25 tons of wool waste. We reimagined waste as a resource and through our upholstery textiles Re-wool (45% recycled wool) and Sabi (23% recycled wool), we recycled our own production waste.

6% more recycled packaging material

In 2021 we started our journey to eliminate all virgin packaging materials. Our aim is to promote the adoption of alternative and recycled packaging solutions. By 2022, 74% of our packaging contained recycled materials, marking a 3% increase compared to the previous year.
