Housed within the iconic Koppel Building at the University of Copenhagen’s North Campus, Lighthouse KUB Nord is a transformation project developed for the Royal Danish Library and Copenhagen University Library. Conceived as a contemporary hub for learning, collaboration and innovation, the project brings together students, researchers and educators in a flexible environment designed to support both physical and hybrid participation.
Overlooking the surrounding park landscape, the interior combines advanced technology, adaptable spatial design and refined material solutions to create an intuitive and welcoming study environment. Kvadrat textiles and Kvadrat Shade roller blinds play a central role in shaping the atmosphere, supporting daylight control, acoustics and spatial flexibility throughout the project.
The space can be continuously reconfigured through the use of motorised curtains, Kvadrat Shade roller blinds and mobile furniture elements, allowing it to accommodate a wide range of activities and modes of interaction. From focused individual study to collaborative workshops and hybrid events, the interior adapts seamlessly to changing user needs.
The motorised Kvadrat Shade roller blinds provide intuitive daylight control through the large floor-to-ceiling windows. In study areas, where concentration and visual comfort are essential, the metallised textile Silvretta reduces glare and improves screen visibility, helping to minimise eye strain during focused work. At the same time, its metallised backing reflects 62% of solar radiation, supporting a stable indoor climate and reducing energy consumption throughout the year.
Complementing the shading solution, specially developed seven-layer curtains further enhance the spatial and acoustic experience. Crafted from different shades of Divina MD and Divina Mélange, the curtains incorporate five sound-absorbing core layers and a leather-finished base. Together, the curtains and roller blinds create an adaptable and acoustically refined environment that balances functionality, comfort and material richness.
Anna Kathrine Bisgaard Sørensen, Senior Creative Leader and Architect MAA Associate, explains: “The ambition has been to create a super user-friendly hybrid-flexible facility where aesthetics and technology interact optimally, and where the user gets a quality experience whether physically present at the location or participating from a distance. This has been achieved thanks to a strong interdisciplinary development collaboration with sub-consultants, suppliers and the client - management and employees at Det Kgl. Bibliotek.”
