Art of Noise at Cooper Hewitt

Kvadrat supports HiFi Pursuit Listening Room Dream No. 3, an installation by multidisciplinary artist and audio designer Devon Turnbull (OJAS), opening this winter at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. The installation forms a central part of Art of Noise, an exhibition celebrating the groundbreaking designs that have shaped how people experience music over the past century.

Originally organised by SFMOMA and adapted for New York, Art of Noise brings together more than 300 works exploring how objects, devices and graphic design have influenced the ways people experience and interact with music. Set within Cooper Hewitt’s historic Carnegie Library, Turnbull’s installation builds on his ongoing HiFi Listening Room Dream series. The large-scale, handmade audio system envelops visitors in richly textured, emotionally resonant sound, delivered through a meticulously engineered high-fidelity system.

To realise the project, Turnbull collaborated with trusted partners from previous ventures, including Kvadrat Acoustics, to fulfil both the acoustic ambitions and aesthetic intentions of the installation, while respecting the character of the historic library setting. All acoustic elements are upholstered in Casa, establishing a cohesive visual expression aligned with Turnbull’s vision for consistent materiality across all treatments.

Further contributing to the installation, Kvadrat Really textile felt — a high-quality engineered material made from end-of-life cotton and wool sourced from the fashion and textile industries, industrial laundries and households — is integrated into the internal structure of the bespoke speakers, continuing the longstanding collaboration between Kvadrat and Turnbull. USM seating throughout the installation features Autumn and Field 2, offering durability, comfort and a refined tactile experience.

About Devon Turnbull

Ojas is the creative pen name of Devon Turnbull. As a university student studying Audio Engineering, Turnbull started using the name across a variety of disciplines including graffiti, music, graphic design, and clothing design. In 2003, Turnbull co-founded the clothing brand Nom de Guerre with Isa Saalabi, Wil Whitney and Holly Harnsongkram. For the next decade, while primarily working in fashion, the name Ojas was kept alive on sound sculptures Turnbull was crafting for himself and a growing number of audio enthusiasts around the world. With a particular interest in high-efficiency speakers and low-powered tube amplifiers, Ojas audio equipment aims to bring realistic, natural sound to the listener. These products are the result of two decades of experimentation, engineering, and explorations in the audio underground.
