Plus points

M+, Asia’s first global museum of contemporary visual culture, integrates an array of Kvadrat curtains and upholsteries. Located on the Victoria Harbour waterfront in Hong Kong, the monolithic venue also incorporates a Kvadrat Acoustics solution in its galleries and cinemas.

Modular seating upholstered in Revive 1 features in the galleries that host the M+ Sigg Collection along with wall panels and Soft Cells Broadline acoustic panels covered with Field. Together these elements help shape a sensorial context for the artworks on display.

Elsewhere at M+, Haze, Time 300 and Air 4 are integrated into displays in the Courtyard Galleries, Canvas is on cabinets in retail zones, and Divina Melange is used to transform pillars and walls. In addition, curtains woven from Time 300 hang in the M+ offices.

Furthermore, expansive curtains made from Star 2 are specified at the Grand Stair, a signature space at the museum characterised by generous topography. They allow it to be transformed into a flexible auditorium and completely blacked out.

Inside the building's three cinemas – including a 180-seat cinema house – the Kvadrat Acoustic solution is installed on ceilings and walls. It comprises Soft Cells Broadline panels covered with a custom version of Basel, which work towards ensuring an optimal experience when viewing films, documentaries, experimental cinema, video art, restored classics and newly discovered or rarely seen films.

Ascan Mergenthaler, Senior Partner, Herzog & de Meuron: “We have a longstanding relationship with Kvadrat. We especially appreciate their core values, which combine reliability and quality with flexibility and creativity. Kvadrat is also very active in the art world through their relationships with artists, so collaborating together on a significant museum like the M+ made for a great match.”

M+ is dedicated to collecting, exhibiting, and interpreting visual art, design and architecture, moving image, and the Hong Kong visual culture of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. It spans 65000 sqm and is composed of a slender tower raised atop an expansive podium.

The podium houses a public roof garden and a sequence of exhibition and display spaces. Rising from the centre of this structure, the terracotta tile-clad tower features a dynamic LED media system on the south facade and includes a research centre, offices, a restaurant, and the M+ Lounge with panoramic views of the harbour.
